Curved Metal Framing System Sets the Roof Geometry at York University Station
/ PROJECT
York University Station | Toronto, ON, Canada
/ SCOPE
Provide a cold-formed steel (CFS) framing system for a 1,140 square meter compound curving roof with sufficient depth to incorporate continuous insulation and a vented cavity above the 2-ply modified bituminous membrane.
Digitally coordinate as-built structural roof deck, CFS framing, roof assembly layers to meet design intent, and project schedule.
Develop a CFS framing system to set the geometry for the doubly curving metal panel roof.
Fabricate and deliver approved CFS framing elements with installation instructions according to schedule.
/ SOLUTION
Radius Track developed a two-way cold-formed steel framing system using computational modeling, physical prototypes and contractor coordination to optimize constructability and installation.
Custom cold-formed steel framing elements precisely curved to shape the roof’s compound curves.
A two-way system of framing elements divided into stick built and unitized layers to optimize installation.
Digital coordination with the roof panel manufacturer to ensure geometric accuracy between framing and finished skin systems.
/ RESULT
The Radius Track two-way cold-formed steel framing system was GEOMETRICALLY PRECISE and thoroughly COORDINATED with both the as-built structure and the metal panel roof system to deliver the compound curved boomerang shaped roof that was a key design element of the metropolitan transit hub.

“We did not have to worry about the geometry and setting out points. Radius Track provided a very clear layout system the we used to set everything from the curved hat-channel to clip angles, site assembled curved framing units and finally the standing seam metal roof. It all fit and was quite amazing.”
